20 Closet Classics

The perfect wardrobe begins with a solid foundation. Once that foundation is built, details can be added to give an extra dose of style that will set your look apart from the rest. I am constantly on the search for classics to add to my wardrobe. Though I love finding statement pieces such as a necklace or a dress, I will always invest in traditional pieces that I know will last me for seasons, if not years to come.

Here are 20 Closet Classics I believe every girl needs in their wardrobe. With these you can put any outfit together and look polished and effortlessly chic.

1. Trench coat

The fit and colour of the trench coat must be perfect. I have one from Target Australia and from Country Road but I am saving up to eventually own a Burberry trench.

2. White button-down shirt

A white button-down adds a crisp polish to both your work and off-duty uniform. I love a good boyfriend cut like this one from Country Road, but find the right fit for you and your shape.

3. Ballet flats

Having a pair of ballet flats in your wardrobe is a must. I was lucky enough to inherit a pair of my American grandmother's black Chanel ballet flats. No matter what brand, ballet flats go with everything.

4. Cashmere Sweater

Whether it's a cashmere crew neck sweater or a cardigan, any cashmere is a great and comfortable choice when the weather becomes cooler. I love my grey marl crew neck from Everlane.

5. Pencil skirt

Pencil skirts are flattering for every body type. Not only for the office, a pencil skirt is an excellent option for an evening outfit with a white tee and leather jacket. JCrew always have gorgeous ones!

6. Leather jacket

A great leather jacket is definitely worth the splurge! Leather only gets better with age, you can wear it all year round and it's great for any occasion to add edge or spunk to an otherwise simple outfit.

7. Black pumps

When it comes to shoes, a pair of black pumps are perhaps the most reliable and versatile option. At once sophisticated and sexy, they’re perfectly suited for almost any outfit and occasion.

8. Boyfriend Jeans

Find a pair of boyfriend jeans with just the right amount of distress and in the perfect wash and you're set! My favourite pair are from Country Road six years ago and they only get better with age.

9. Denim skinny jeans

In short, fit and wash are everything when it comes to denim skinnys. When looking for a pair, go for a slightly high-rise style to give the illusion of longer, slim legs and stick to a true blue wash that will go with everything. Skinny black jeans are also a must. And while skinny white jeans can look immaculate, they do not suit every body type. Choose your denim skinnys with care. I found the perfect pair at Dejour Denim in Melbourne.

Whether an investment piece or not, the everyday handbag will be the go-to sac for your everyday essentials.

11. The blazer

A good blazer will take your look from average to polished. The right blazer can make a bad day good, the perfect blazer can change your life.

12. The "I look fabulous dress"

It may take years to find your "I look fabulous dress", but it's a must for your wardrobe. I found mine at Scanlan and Theodore. I paid a fortune for it but every time I wear it I feel invincible, just like a Bond girl who could conquer the world. If you come across a potential "I look fabulous dress" and it doesn't make you feel like a Bond girl, reconsider the purchase and keep looking. You will know when you find it!

13. Perfect white tee

I am not a t-shirt wearing girl so this classic doesn't appear in my top list, however I thought I needed to include it as it is a basic for many. As long as it's kept white (which is probably why it isn't in my top picks) you can team it with anything and look relaxed but polished. For weekend, wear it with boyfriend jeans, a trench coat and ballet flats. For work or an evening out wear a white tee with a pencil skirt or trousers and a structured blazer.

14. Leather pants

Leather pants have only come onto the scene as a wardrobe staple in recent years. With leather the fit and cut must be perfect. Faux leather leggings, or leggings at all for that matter, do not cut it. Invest in a great pair, they will last you the distance. I found my pair at Allsaints.

15. The right shades for you

You only need to own one pair of sunglasses. They should suit your face shape and your style but most of all they should make you look amazing even when you don't feel it.

16. Ankle boots

Ankle boots go with everything. With countless versions available, finding a heel height, cut, and colour that suits your style is easy. My favourites are the Rag & Bone's Newbury boot, I own three pairs. They are the perfect heel height, comfortable enough to wear all day, the leather is supple and the shape is perfect. I would recommend buying a leather or suede pair over non-leather, it's definitely worth the investment. Leather shoes last a lot longer. If a full leather pair is too pricey, invest in a pair that has a leather footbed, these will be more comfortable than a PU footbed.

17. Scarf

An essential for jet-setters. A scarf, whether woollen, silk, cotton or cashmere, is an easy accessory to add to an outfit. Chic but also versatile, shielding you from any chill that may blow your way.

18. Silk camisole

A silk camisole can be worn with everything and anything. Own one in every colour. This one is from Camilla and marc.

19. Chambray shirt

While a classic white shirt will forever have a place in women’s closets, a fitted chambray or denim button-down is just as versatile. Wear it the same way you would a white shirt: tucked into jeans, under a sweater or blazer, with a pencil skirt, or with a pair of trousers for work.

20. Trousers

Trousers are another place to invest in. With quality fabric and impeccable tailoring, a great pair of trousers can make you look like you stepped off the streets of Paris Fashion Week. Cropped, tailored, wide-leg or slim fit, there are many different types of trousers to suit all body types. Find which one suits you, then buy a pair in every colour and print you can find.

There may be other essentials you would add to your list of Closet Classics but these are my basics. I hope they help you gather your own Closet Classics!
