10 Ways to Embrace Hygge in Your Life

Hygge Lei Lady Lei

Hygge, pronounced hoo-gah, is the Danish concept of cosiness and the feeling of contentment or well-being and togetherness. Some authors of Hygge books refer to hygge as simply taking pleasure in the presence of gentle, soothing things, like a freshly brewed cup of coffee and cashmere. Others link hygge to food. Perhaps hygge is lifestyle trend that has been and gone, however no matter how trending it is or isn't, the importance of the concept has not disappeared. So appreciate the small, hygge things in life. Make essential and mundane tasks dignified, joyful, and beautiful. Focus on what brings you a better quality of life.

10 Ways to Embrace Hygge in Your Life

  1. Reserve solitary time at home. Block out your calendar and make plans with yourself.
  2. Invest in candles to bring atmosphere and a cosy vibe into your home.
  3. Add texture with sheepskin throws, luxe cashmere blankets and fluffy slippers.
  4. Hygge with friends and enjoy a night in eating wholesome food in front of the fire (or heater), play boardgames (this is my current favourite) and drink mulled wine. Find the recipe here.
  5. Take time out from your phone, computer or television. Pick up a book instead. I highly recommend this to get your spine tingling and this to get your creative juices flowing.
  6. Don't rush. Personally, I am great at rushing and it's not good. At times I feel I cannot get ready for the day without having time constraints upon me. Immediately starting the day rushed and therefore stressed is not ideal.
  7. Love your space and make it your sanctuary so fill each space with things that help you to really achieve this. And equally as important, don't clutter up your space with things just because you love them. Select the pieces wisely and without thought. Read more about conscious consumerism here.
  8. Hygge is not just for winter, While always associated with cosiness, hygge can be enjoyed in any season. From heading to the local park or go for a hike with friends, to afternoons of sun and garden barbecues, make time for hygge in the spring and summer too.
  9. Leave work on time, work-life-balance is very important.
  10. Surround yourself with greenery, whether it is at work or home.
